What is Dementia Care?

Dementia is a term that encompasses a wide range of conditions that result in an impairment of cognitive abilities; its progression and how an individual lives with the condition depends on factors such as life experiences, personality, emotional or psychological wellbeing, physical or medical conditions, environment and social context. Similarly, the progression of the condition can be gradual and stable or unpredictable and unstable; for this reason, finding the appropriate level of care in a suitable environment could be a considerable challenge.

Regardless of the specific condition or type of dementia, its stage or progression, appropriate care will depend primarily on physical and psychological conditions and they how affect overall wellbeing.

Dementia Care can be categorised as follows

Dementia Residential Care

Dementia Residential Care is suitable for people who live with dementia needing encouragement, support and assistance as described above. However, residential care would not be suitable if there is a high level of distress or anxiety which would require frequent interventions from healthcare professionals such as therapists, mental health nurses or psychiatrists.

Dementia Nursing Care

Dementia Nursing Care is suitable for people who live with dementia needing encouragement, support and assistance as described above and who have enduring and / or unstable physical medical conditions that require regular nursing assessment and monitoring to maintain safety and wellbeing.

Dementia residential care or dementia nursing care would not be suitable if there is a high level of distress or anxiety which results in difficulties with keeping safe or impulsive decisions and where frequent interventions from healthcare professionals such therapists, mental health nurses or psychiatrists are required to maintain emotional or psychological wellbeing.
